The EDIH CASSOVIUM consortium consists of three key institutions operating in Eastern Slovakia: the Technical University of Košice, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, and Košice IT Valley. Through public funding from the Digital Europe Programme and the Recovery and Resilience Plan, we offer businesses and organizations a unique opportunity to transform their operations and activities.
The Technical University of Košice www.tuke.en, established in 1952, provides a full range of educational, research, and innovation activities in the fields of technical sciences, economics, and arts within the ESK-REG region. The development and transfer of knowledge in the broadest sense remain the university’s primary focus. TUKE strives to maintain coherent and interdependent relationships between teaching, research, and innovation activities in line with the European state of the art.
The university comprises 9 faculties: Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnologies; Faculty of Materials, Metallurgy and Recycling; Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; Faculty of Civil Engineering; Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics; Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies; Faculty of Economics; Faculty of Arts; and Faculty of Aeronautics. TUKE has approximately 9,700 students and 1,400 staff members, including 950 academic staff. Seven technical faculties support internationally recognized scientific and research excellence through seven centers of excellence.
TUKE provides the region with a scientific and technological knowledge base, innovations, and workforce to help shape a prosperous and sustainable future and improve the quality of life for citizens. In fulfilling this mission, the University Science Park TECHNICOM (UVP TECHNICOM – www.uvptechnicom.en , a university-wide institution at TUKE, plays a key role. UVP serves as an effective platform (ecosystem) for supporting applied research and development and for promoting innovation activities, knowledge and technology transfer through active cooperation between academia, society, and the business sector across the region, the country, and the EU.
Within the EDIH CASSOVIUM consortium, UVP TECHNICOM will play a key role as the central hub for management, organization, administration, training, presentation, communication, and collaboration.
Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) is one of the prominent and respected educational and research institutions not only in Slovakia but also in Europe. Currently, UPJŠ has five faculties: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration, and Faculty of Arts. UPJŠ provides higher education at all three levels, based on high-quality research supported by extensive international cooperation. Increasingly, the university is focusing on leveraging the potential of university science parks and research and development centers of excellence in biomedicine, materials research, informatics, and information technologies, with the goal of creating intellectual property and transferring research results into practice.
The university hosts six centers of excellence that demonstrate internationally recognized scientific quality. According to evaluations by the Slovak Accreditation Agency and the Ministry of Education, UPJŠ received the status of Top Research Teams in the field of informatics. UPJŠ also operates an internationally accredited CSIRT center, which provides cybersecurity services to internal and external clients. The university has long-term experience in developing and implementing complex information systems. UPJŠ is a member of national platforms in the fields of quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and is also a member of the Budapest node of EIT Digital.
Košice IT Valley (KEITVA) is an internationally recognized regional cluster of IT companies and a key stakeholder in the economic transformation of the ESK-REG region. It consists of 62 members operating in the fields of information technology, education, and public administration. The partner plays a crucial role in the development of the IT industry in the Košice region. It was established in 2007 as a joint initiative of educational institutions (including TUKE and UPJŠ), regional government, municipalities, and leading IT companies. In 2012, it was transformed into a cluster, and in 2015, it became the first in Central Europe to receive the “Cluster Management Excellence Label GOLD” certification.
Top international IT companies implement unique projects in healthcare, smart cities, energy, transport, and metallurgy. Thanks to their innovative approach, other projects have also been launched in the ESK-REG region, contributing significantly to the development of the IT ecosystem. The cluster also facilitates the involvement of IT companies in the educational process at universities (Live IT Projects), secondary schools (Lab IT Creativity), and primary schools (Step by Step – from the product idea). The cluster organizes public educational activities to build skills for UX/UI designers, programmers, project managers, women in IT, and raises awareness of topics such as Industry 4.0, machine learning, big data, and artificial intelligence.
The EDIH Network plays an important role in the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises. It supports the European Union and its goals through advanced digital technologies and by ensuring the digital maturity of SMEs. The EDIH Network offers a wide range of services to support digitalization, including test and experimentation facilities, training, mentoring, access to financing, and networking opportunities.
